Primrose Vale, just outside Cheltenham, grows a range of crops for pick-your-own from late May until October. Strawberries, grown on raised table-tops, are the main crop, with soft fruit through the summer and plums, apples and pears in the autumn. Entry and parking are free and you do not need to book; you pay by weight for what you pick. Bring your own container; staff weigh it first and deduct it from the bill. Check the daily picking update before travelling, as fruit can run short and fields occasionally close early. Picking hours in the season are 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9.30am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
In October the pumpkin patch runs at weekends and during the autumn half term while stocks last, in a field across the road from the shop. Entry is ticketed in timed slots and redeemable against the pumpkins you pick. Ticketed Halloween and Easter trails run in the October half term and the Easter holidays.
From late November the farm sells Christmas trees via Cotswold Fir, from a covered sales area rather than cut from a field: cut Nordmann firs and other firs and spruces from 2ft to 14ft, plus pot-grown trees to buy or rent. Rentals can be booked from October, from £30 for a 3ft tree plus a £15 refundable deposit.
The farm shop is open all year: 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and 9.30am to 5pm Sunday from June to September, and 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday from October to May. It stocks the farm’s own fruit and vegetables alongside local bread, cheese, meat and groceries. The Potting Shed cafe serves hot drinks, baps and ice cream through the summer, and coffee is available in the shop all year. There is a free outdoor play area, wheelchair access and 24-hour vending machines. Dogs are not allowed in the picking fields, shop or play area.
What visitors say
The summer pick-your-own focuses on strawberries, raspberries and other berries, picked by weight with the punnet included in the price. The fruit is generally fresh and the rows well organised, though a few patches have drawn complaints about quality and weeds, so ring ahead to check what is available. Price divides opinion, with the picking seen as reasonable but the shop on the high side. The shop sells local produce, cheese, bread and cakes, and the café does hot food, ice cream and milkshakes; when closed, vending machines still serve coffee, milk in glass bottles and snacks at any hour, alongside six fast EV chargers that work outside shop hours.
There is a good play area for children, and seasonal activities like the Halloween trail and Easter egg hunt are popular. Toilets are the main complaint, with limited facilities and queues at busy times. In December, choose Christmas trees from the field, with a good range of sizes and help carrying them to the car.
Seasons and opening times change, so check with the farm before you go.
