What you can pick
Tallington Farm near Stamford is a working arable farm of 112 hectares that has been run by the Thurlby family for four generations. It grows Christmas trees on site and sells them from the farmyard. The yard opens to the public from late November with a large selection of cut trees to choose from, ranging from 2ft to 20ft in different varieties. You pay by cash or card, and the farm is open daily from 9am to 4.30pm during the season. Trees can also be pre-ordered outside these hours.
For trees over 10ft, you can arrange a visit to the field in October or November to choose and tag one. The farm cuts the tagged tree down and holds it for collection, or delivers it locally when you decide. Local delivery is available for trees from the yard as well, and wreaths are sold alongside them.
As well as Christmas trees, the farm sells eggs and foliage from the gate, and Lovells Carp Lakes on the site offers fishing. The farm runs a free educational visit scheme for schools, with visits tailored to curriculum needs. Groups of up to 35 pupils can meet the animals and use the on-site classroom, and there is parking in the yard for coaches or cars.
What visitors say
The Christmas trees are consistently fantastic quality, and regulars who buy here every year describe them as amazing and beautiful. The staff are lovely, helpful and polite, and they will help you pick a tree that suits your home. The value for money is hard to beat. There is also a wreath-making class run each year by Elle, something one visitor looks forward to, and Will gets a specific mention for his hard work over the busy period.
Seasons and opening times change, so check with the farm before you go.
